Passwordless Support with PropelAuth
Passwords have been around for a long time, and while they are easy to understand, they do come with some drawbacks.
You probably already know these drawbacks. People forget passwords leading to password reset flows where users could potentially churn. People re-use passwords meaning if one site is compromised, all their accounts can be compromised. Some sites make bad password requirements that don't do much to protect their users and can both drive users away or force them to pick less secure passwords.
PropelAuth has protected our customers' users by providing breached password detection, where we don't allow users to re-use passwords that were seen in a breach. Our password requirements are based on NIST guidelines which are designed to be both user friendly and secure. We have protection from brute force attacks and 2FA support.
Today, we're going a step further and releasing support for passwordless logins.
How does it work?
When enabled, your users can enter their email. They will receive a link and when they click that link they will be logged in. That's it.
Are passwords still supported?
Yes, they are. For all their drawbacks, passwords still can provide a really great user experience and are easily understandable by everyone. If you use a password manager, you probably know the feeling of going to a site, having the log in form auto populate, and logging in quickly.
Ultimately, we believe that you know your users best, and we want to provide you with the tools to help get your users in the door. If you don't like passwordless, you can disable it in one click.
If you providing your users with the option of both password and passwordless login, when a user goes to reset their password, we will also provide the option for them to get a passwordless magic link instead.
Going forward, all new projects will start with both passwords and passwordless enabled. If you have already created a project, you can enable passwordless in your dashboard.
